A few of you asked the obvious follow-up: okay, so how do I actually have it?

Fair question. But before we get to how, we need to be honest about why you haven’t already — because most advice on this skips straight to scripts, and scripts don’t work if you don’t understand what you’re actually afraid of.

It’s not that you don’t know what to say.

Most adult children I talk to have rehearsed this conversation a dozen times in their head, usually at 2am after a phone call that didn’t sit right. They know the talking points. Falls. Medication mix-ups. Isolation. Weight loss. The car they probably shouldn’t be driving anymore. That’s not the blocker. If a lack of information were the problem, this niche wouldn’t be full of checklists that nobody acts on.

<a class="image-link image2 “the conversation.” You’re avoiding one specific version of it — the one where your parent gets defensive, shuts down, or says something like “so you think I’m helpless now.” You’ve probably had a preview of this reaction before, on a smaller issue, and it’s stuck with you. So you wait. You tell yourself you’re waiting for “the right moment.”

There is no right moment. There’s just the moment you decide the discomfort is worth it.

Why waiting feels safer than it is

Here’s the part nobody says out loud: waiting doesn’t actually reduce the risk of a bad reaction. It just delays it — usually until you’re forced into the conversation by an incident, which is the worst possible time to have it. A fall, a hospital stay, a scary phone call from a neighbor. By then, the conversation isn’t “let’s think about this together.” It’s “we have no choice.” You lose the thing that actually makes this work: your parent’s sense that they still have a say.

Every month you wait for the “right moment” is a month you’re not building the option of a calm conversation. You’re trading it for a forced one.

Three things that change the outcome — not the script, the approach

1. Bring one thing, not everything

Walking in with “we need to talk about your safety” invites a full-scale defense, because it sounds like an evaluation of their entire life. Walking in with “I noticed the front step’s been bugging you — want me to look at it this weekend?” invites a yes, because it’s small, specific, and solvable.

Here’s the mechanism: broad, abstract threats trigger identity defense (”you think I can’t take care of myself”). Narrow, concrete asks don’t, because they’re not about identity — they’re about one step, one light bulb, one rug. Win the small ask. The willingness to accept help on one thing makes the next ask easier. This is sequencing, not manipulation — you’re not tricking anyone, you’re just not starting with the hardest version of the conversation.

2. Ask, don’t announce

“I think you need a medical alert device” is a verdict. Verdicts get resisted on principle, even when they’re right — nobody likes being told what they need, regardless of age.

“What would make you feel better about being here alone at night?” is a question they get to answer. It hands them the pen. Maybe they say a medical alert device. Maybe they say a phone charger by the bed, or better outdoor lighting, or a neighbor’s number written down somewhere visible. Whatever they land on, it was their idea — which means they’ll actually use it.

This isn’t a trick to get them to agree to what you already decided. Sometimes they’ll land somewhere different than what you had in mind, and that’s fine — a smaller solution they’ll use beats a bigger one they’ll ignore.

3. Normalize it as maintenance, not decline

Frame safety changes the way you’d frame anything else that needs occasional updating — a car, a roof, an HVAC system. Nobody feels insulted replacing brake pads or getting new gutters. The insult isn’t in the object. It’s in the framing.

“You need this because you’re getting older and can’t manage anymore” — decline framing, guaranteed resistance. “The house needs a few updates, same as any house does over time” — maintenance framing, no resistance.

Same grab bar. Same outcome. Completely different emotional entry point.

A short example of what this looks like in practice

Say your dad’s been slower getting up from his recliner, and you’ve noticed him gripping the armrest hard. The instinct is to say something like: “Dad, I’m worried you’re going to fall. We need to get you a better chair or a lift assist.”

That’s a verdict, wrapped in a diagnosis, delivered as an announcement. Even if every word is true, it invites defensiveness.

Try instead: “That chair looks like it’s getting harder to get out of — is your back bothering you, or is it more the height of it?” You’re not diagnosing decline. You’re asking about comfort. If he says the height’s annoying, you’re now talking about a chair upgrade, not a safety intervention — and he’s the one who identified the problem.

The uncomfortable truth

This conversation will probably always feel a little uncomfortable, even when you do everything right. The families who navigate this well aren’t the ones who found the perfect words — they’re the ones who accepted that some discomfort now beats a crisis later, and started having smaller versions of this conversation months or years before they felt “ready.”

Waiting for comfortable is waiting for something that isn’t coming. Start with the small ask instead.

Next week: what to do when your parent flatly refuses — and the difference between refusal and denial. Most families treat them the same way, which is exactly why the second and third attempts at this conversation fail even when the first one didn’t.

Thanks for reading Aging In Place! It isn’t — behavior change under resistance is.

Three things the standard checklist skips:

1. The equipment nobody uses
A grab bar installed after a family argument gets used for two weeks, then ignored. Not because it doesn’t work — because it was framed as “you’re getting old” instead of “this makes the shower easier for everyone.” Positioning determines adoption. Adoption determines whether the safety feature does anything at all.

2. The timeline problem
Families install safety measures reactively — after the fall, after the ER visit. The checklist is a response plan, not a prevention plan. By the time you’re implementing it, you’re already behind.

3. The conversation gap
No amount of hardware fixes a parent who won’t admit they need it.
